Scope and Content New Bridge, Stirling (Stirling council area) This bridge was built to designs by Robert Stevenson to provide a better coach road from Stirling to the north than that afforded by the 15th/16th century Old Bridge with its pronounced hump. The old bridge was retained for local traffic. This view shows the New Bridge from the south east. Note that it is built with 'rock-faced' ashlar, masonry in which the outer face of the stone is left unpolished. Note also that the courses above the arch rings are arranged radially. This bridge still carries heavy local traffic, though bypassed for main road traffic in the 1970s and 80s. Its predecessor. Just upstream, was consolidated c1911, and is now maintained as an ancient monument, by Historic Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
