Scope and Content Caledonian Railway viaduct, Stirling (Stirling council area) This viaduct replaced an earlier structure built for the opening of the Scottish Central Railway in 1848. This was a cast-iron arched viaduct designed by Locke and Errington, which could no longer handle the post-1900 railway traffic. This view shows part of the viaduct, which spans the river Forth, from the west.. It was rebuilt in steel c1905, to designs by DA Mathieson, engineer to the Caledonian Railway, with N-trusses. The earlier North British Railway viaduct is to the rear. The Caledonian Railway began in the 1880s a programme of replacement of viaducts built of timber and cast-iron in the 1840s and 1850s. This was one of the last to be dealt with. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
