Scope and Content North British Railway and Caledonian Railway viaducts, Stirling (Stirling council area) Both of these viaducts replaced earlier structures, the one on the right one built for the opening of the Stirling and Dunfermline Railway in 1852. and the one on the left a viaduct built for the Scottish Central Railway in 1848. This view shows the viaducts, which span the river Forth, from the south.. The North British viaduct on the right was probably rebuilt in the 1870s, and the one on the left was rebuilt in steel c1905, to designs by DA Mathieson. The North British Railway viaduct appears to be built with malleable iron lattice trusses, and the Caledonian Railway one has steel N trusses. This direct comparison of trusses is a unique feature of this location. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
