Scope and Content Inverness Station, Station Square, Inverness, Inverness-shire (Highland council area) This station was begun in 1855 to serve the Inverness and Nairn Railway, and was subsequently mush altered and extended by succeeding owners, most recently in the 1950s. It is a terminal station, serving trains on lines to north east and south. This view shows the main arrival platform, with a late 19th century overall roof, supported to the right on cast iron columns, probably of earlier date, The train was a sleeping car express from London. Inverness Station is peculiar in having two sets of platforms not directly connected by rail. Trains wishing to use both sets of platforms have to reverse twice, going round a triangle with railway workshops in the middle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
