Scope and Content The 'Craigentinny Marbles' (the William Henry Miller Mausoleum), Craigentinny Crescent, Restalrig, Edinburgh The 'Craigentinny Marbles', a huge mausoleum designed by David Rhind in 1848-56, was erected to the memory of William Henry Miller of Craigentinny House. The tomb stands over his grave in Craigentinny Avenue, surrounded by prim 20th-century bungalows. This huge pedimented Roman mausoleum, 'in commemoration of the private virtues of the deceased', has marble side panels, carved by the sculptor Alfred Gatley, depicting 'the Overthrow of Pharaoh in the Red Sea' and 'the Song of Moses and Miriam'. William Henry Miller (1789-1848) of Craigentinny, a recluse and eccentric, was MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme. In his will he directed he was to be buried at a depth of 40 feet in a remote spot on his estate, with a marble monument erected to his memory. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
