Scope and Content Dovecot, Lochend House, Lochend Park, Restalrig, Edinburgh Lochend House, an ancient tower-house built for the Logans of Restalrig, stands high on a precipitous site on the west side of Lochend Loch. Only a picturesque 16th-century fragment of the original building now survives. The dovecot, a beehive structure divided horizontally by a string-course, stands to the north of the house on the opposite side of the loch. It dates from the 16th century although its doorway has almost certainly been enlarged at a later date. The dovecot provided safe nesting sites for several hundred pairs of pigeons which, in turn, provided an all-year-round supply of meat (the dish of the day being pigeon-pie!) and eggs for Lochend House. Their droppings were used as manure for the garden. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
