Date 1980

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 572880

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Rosebank Distillery, Falkirk, Stirlingshire (Falkirk council area) The early history of this Lowland Malt distillery is obscure, but it was certainly operating from c1840 in the ownership of James Rankine. It was rebuilt in 1864-5, and became part of Scottish Malt Distillers in 1914. It closed in 1993. This view shows the yeast hoist in the tun room, used for lifting bags of yeast for loading into the washbacks to start the fermentation of the wort into wash. This hoist was an unusual feature of the distillery. Rosebank is said to have been converted from the maltings of Camelon Distillery, but this may refer to the Rosebank maltings, which were on the Camelon side of the Forth and Clyde Canal, closed in 1968, and have been demolished.
