Scope and Content Bladnoch Distillery, near Wigtown, Wigtownshire (Dumfries and Galloway council area) This Lowland Malt whisky distillery was founded in 1817 by Thomas McClelland, under the provisions of the Small Stills Act passed in the previous year. It was closed from 1938 to 1956. In 1980 it belonged to Inver House Distillers Ltd. This view shows an old spirit receiver used in the filling store before 1938, and out of use in 1980. In comparison with the spirit receivers used in 1980 it is very small, and probably contained the produce of one distillation from two stills. Bladnoch was bought in 1983 by Arthur Bell and Sons Ltd, and was taken over with that company by Guinness in 1985, and became part of United Distillers in 1986. It was closed in 1993, and converted into a visitor centre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
