Scope and Content Invergordon Grain and Ben Wyvis Malt distilleries, Invergordon, Ross and Cromarty (Highland council area) Invergordon Distillery was founded in 1959 by The Invergordon Distilleries Ltd, a company formed by Provost Grigor of Inverness and Frank Thomson, a local chartered accountant, to counter unemployment following closure of a naval base. This view shows the malt mills for Invergordon and Ben Wyvis distilleries, the latter on the right. The crushed malt from the Invergordon mill was added to the cooked maize in a mash tun, the enzymes in the malt breaking down the starch in the maize. As built Invergordon had a single Coffey continuous still; two more were added in 1963, and a fourth large continuous still was installed in 1978. Ben Wyvis malt distillery operated within the complex from 1965 to 1977. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
