Scope and Content Tamdhu Distillery, Knockando, Moray (Moray council area) This distillery was originally built in 1896-7 by the Tamdhu Distillery Co Ltd, owned by a consortium of blenders, and was purchased in 1899 by Highland Distilleries. It was closed from 1927 to 1949. In the early 1970s it was extended and largely rebuilt. This view shows the stillhouse, as extended in the 1970s from two to six stills, showing four of the large stills. The second still from the right is of riveted construction, and was one of the original 1896-7 stills. It was in its last season of use. By 1980 there were very few riveted stills left in Scotland. This one owed its survival to the long period from 1927 to 1949 during which it had been out of use. More modern stills are of welded construction. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
