Scope and Content Tamdhu Distillery, Knockando, Moray This distillery was originally built in 1896-7 by the Tamdhu Distillery Co Ltd, owned by a consortium of blenders, and was purchased in 1899 by Highland Distilleries. It was closed from 1927 to 1949. In the early 1970s it was extended and largely rebuilt. This view shows part of the 'Saladin' malting plant installed, when the distillery was re-commissioned in 1949, within the shell of the former floor maltings. The round vessels are the steeps in which the barley is soaked in water to start germination. The Saladin process was developed in France as a variant of floor malting to reduce the labour input. The open floors were replaced by concrete 'boxes' with perforated floors, through which air could be fed, and with mechanical turning of the malt. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
