Scope and Content Auld Brig o' Doon, Alloway, Ayrshire (South Ayrshire council area) The Auld Brig o' Doon was made famous by Robert Burns in his long poem 'Tam o' Shanter, but it is of considerable interest in its own right as a surviving single-arched medieval bridge. This view shows the bridge from the south end. It is constructed largely of sandstone ashlar, The scale of the single arch can be appreciated from this viewpoint. The bridge was repaired in 1832, and again in 1979-80, when a large number of face stones were replaced. Regardless of how much original fabric remains, this is a noble as well as famous structure.
