Scope and Content Gravestone of Andrew Pateson, Kelso old churchyard, Scottish Borders This gravestone commemorates Andrew Pateson, a dyer, who died in 1704 aged 65. Beneath the skull and crossbones, symbols of death, are the tools of a dyers trade. On the right are a pair of tongs and a press, whilst on the far left is a tub and cloth. An hourglass in the centre symbolises man's mortality. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
