Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating Adam Turner, Ettleton burial ground, Scottish Borders This gravestone commemorates Adam Turner, a miller, who died in 1728, aged 68. A winged cherub symbolises the soul's ascent to heaven. Beneath is a millrind, a piece of metal used to support the upper millstone, a symbol commonly used to denote the miller's trade. The roses intertwined around it are a decorative feature. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
