Scope and Content Glengarioch Distillery, Distillery Road, Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire (Aberdeenshire council area) This distillery was established by Thomas Simpson in 1798 and re-established in 1827 by Ingram, Lamb and Co. It eventually passed into the hands of The Distillers' Co Ltd, who closed it in 1968 and sold it in 1970 to Stanley P Morrison (Agencies) Ltd. This view shows the kiln floor, with malt being dried. The moist 'green' malt from the floor is spread on a woven-wire floor below which a coke or peat fire burns. The hot gases from the fire rise through the malt to dry it. In 1980 this was one of a handful of malt whisky distilleries still floor malting in the traditional way. The others were Highland Park, Benriach, Glendronach and Bowmore. The rest had malt supplied by large central maltings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
