Scope and Content Former Dunaskin Brickworks (ex Dalmellington Ironworks), by Dalmellington, Ayrshire This brickworks was built in about 1936 on part of the site of the Dalmellington Ironworks, founded in 1847, which closed in 1921, and was dismantled in the early 1930s. The blowing engine houses were retained to house brick presses. This view shows one of the two brick kilns constructed when the brickworks conversion took place. This one has a series of chambers with transverse arches, which can resist higher temperatures. This kiln made engineering bricks, which are fired at a higher temperature than common building bricks so that they are denser and more water-resistant. The roofed superstructure helped to conserve heat. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
