Scope and Content View of doorway in corridor wall of Airds House, Argyll and Bute Airds House is a well-preserved Classical mansion which was built for Donald Campbell of Airds in 1738-9. The architect is unknown but the inspiration for its design may have been derived partly from the south front of Marble Hill House in Twickenham. This round-arched door has a surround of large blocks of stone on top of a narrow raised band of stone. This is known as a Gibbs surround. The door has since been remodelled as a window. On the wall above the door is an ornamental ball finial. The wall is surmounted by a corniced coping stone. At either side of the main block of the house there is a curved corridor which leads to a two-storeyed pavilion. Each linking section has a door in the centre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
