Scope and Content Painting of Oban, Argyll and Bute Oban is the largest town in Lorn. However, its growth has been comparatively recent. In the first quarter of the 18th century a Renfrew company recognised the excellence of the anchorage in Oban Bay and established a trading station there. In 1758 the area was surveyed for the Duke of Argyll and other landowners by an engineer, Daniel Paterson, and as a result of this, the Duke had the custom house transferred from Fort William. This stimulated further development in the town. By the end of the 18th century a distillery and shipbuilding yard had been established. In 1820 Oban acquired burgh status and in 1832, with a population of almost 1,500, it became a parliamentary burgh, and was a prosperous town by the date of this view.
