Scope and Content Plan of Oban, Argyll and Bute Oban is the largest town in Lorn. However, its growth has been comparatively recent. The growth of the town was stimulated originally by a Renfrew company who set up a trading station in the first quarter of the 18th century. The first houses were built in Shore Street and on the south side of Argyll Square. The main development did not take place until c.1809, when the plan adopted was a simple grid-pattern based on the principal north-south thoroughfare of George Street. In 1820 Oban had acquired burgh status and in 1832, with a population of almost 1,500, it became a parliamentary burgh. By the mid-19th century Oban was prosperous and was a fashionable resort visited by tourists on their way to the Western Isles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
