Scope and Content Detail from the headstone of George Leets' family, Liberton Parish Churchyard, Kirkgate, Liberton, Edinburgh The churchyard of Liberton Parish Church dates from the time of the old parish church which stood on the site until it was demolished in 1814. The churchyard, which surrounds the present church on four sides, contains many interesting old headstones. George Leets' stone, erected in 1763 to the memory of his parents and children, bears the unusual carving of two figures, described as 'Highland porters with kilts, plaids and aprons, check hose and bonnets', carrying a cask slung on a pole. The scene depicts the 'Stingmen', known as 'Sting' and 'Ling', who carried casks of ale to customers. They were the symbols of maltmen and brewers, one of many different emblems of trades found on 18th-century tombstones. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
