Scope and Content View of exterior of gate-house, Torrisdale Castle, Argyll and Bute Torrisdale Castle (right) originally was a castellated Georgian Gothic house, designed for General Keith Macalister in 1815. In the early 20th century, extensive north and south wings were added to the house, using the same Gothic style. This castellated entrance lodge was probably erected towards the end of the 19th century. Known also as The Arch, it has a pointed archway surmounted by corbels, or projecting blocks of stone. The corbels support round turrets with crenellated parapets. There is a carved panel with the Macalister coat of arms between the turrets, or rounds. The rounds themselves are decorated with cruciform loops. There are buttresses at the sides of the archway under the rounds. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
