Scope and Content A portfolio containing 161 drawings by Alistair J Rowan, primarily carried out as part of his degree course in Architecture at Edinburgh College of Art 1956–61. The collection has been stored in a Hardmuth’s Portfolio, Imperial size (23” x 32”) and includes esquisses, survey drawings, sketches, finished design drawings and manuscript material. A manuscript account of Rowan’s recollections of his course accompanies the portfolio. It describes the architectural teaching staff and teaching methods, fellow students and evokes his response to the work set by his tutors. The collection also comprises photographic prints and negatives of Scottish country houses.
Archive History The collection of student drawings was presented to RCAHMS in 2001 (Acc No 2001/2). Professor Rowan's photographs were initially deposited only as prints. The associated negatives were deposited later (Acc No 2015/52).
System of Arrangement The drawings collection is arranged by the five years of the ECA course, followed by undated material and by non-course work. The photographic collection comprises two main elements: the prints, which were catalogued individually, and filed by building in the Search Room photographic boxes. The associated negatives, which were received later, have not yet been associated with the individual prints, but are arranged by building.
