Scope and Content Plan of hall at Torrisdale Castle, Argyll and Bute Torrisdale Castle was originally a castellated Georgian Gothic house, designed for General Keith Macalister in 1815. In the early 20th century, extensive north and south wings were added to the house, using the same Gothic style. The hall is in the original part of the house, which is thought to have been designed by James Gillespie Graham (1777-1855), a Scottish architect who specialised in asymmetrical Gothic buildings. Henry Clifford was responsible for adding the wings to the house and redesigning its interior apart from the dining room. He altered Graham's hall, creating a wide opening between Ionic pilasters. He panelled the walls and added a large chimneypiece. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
