Scope and Content View of Appin House from the south, Argyll and Bute The original house at Appin was probably erected early in the 18th century by Robert Stewart, 8th of Appin, who had succeeded to the estate as a minor before 1685. Around 1816 the estate was acquired by Robert Downie who erected the south-east wing. To the left is the original house. It is three-storeyed and has a symmetrical main front. There are three ranges of windows and a central entrance doorway. The entrance porch and the balustraded parapet with pinnacles were added in the 19th century. To the right is the 19th-century south-east wing, finished in 1831, which is single-storeyed with a semi-octagonal projection in the centre of the main front. There is a balustraded parapet and square turrets surmounted by pinnacles at the corners. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
