Scope and Content View of Appin House from south-east, Argyll and Bute The original house at Appin was probably erected early in the 18th century by Robert Stewart, 8th of Appin, who had succeeded to the estate as a minor before 1685. Around 1816 the estate was acquired by Robert Downie who erected the south-east wing. In 1831 the original house was remodelled externally to match the new south-east wing. The masonry is of rubble, now cement-rendered, but probably originally harled. The windows have been widened to let in more light. The roofs are slated and hipped. To the right in the foreground is the south-east wing. To the left is the original house. To the far right is the court of offices which dates mainly to late 18th and 19th century. Since 1965 the older part of the house has been entirely demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
