Scope and Content Detail of entrance to Saddell Castle, Argyll and Bute Saddell Castle was built in 1508-10 by David Hamilton, Bishop of Argyll. It was attacked in 1558 but the extent of the damage is unknown. In 1650 much of it was repaired. It was restored in the 19th century and again in the 1970s. The entrance doorway is at ground floor level and it has a surround of multiple cable-moulding, which looks like the strands of a rope. The lintel above the doorway incorporates a cable-bordered stone panel bearing the incised date 1508. Above the lintel there is a heraldic panel decorated with a galley with furled sails and a double-headed eagle. Apart from the heraldic panel, the rest of the doorway probably dates to the late 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
