Scope and Content These photographs were taken between 1962 and 1985, during the operational period of the Scottish Development Department. The collection documents both urban and rural areas throughout Scotland including cities, towns and villages, and reflects the department’s role in supporting Scotland’s town and county planning and housing developments as well as changes Scottish industry. Elements of the collection were digitised as part of the Historic Environment Scotland Digital Projects team, 2017-2021, and can be found under Group Investigator Photographs (391/2). These photographs are collected in batches with unique reference numbers. This hierarchy is arranged by sub-groups arranged by catalogue reference prefix; followed by batches representing photograph envelopes in the collection. . Metadata for this collection was mass ingested from investigator records. This metadata was transcribed from handwritten records, retaining shorthand and abbreviations generated during record creation. Post ingest some inaccuracies have been identified in the original investigator record sheets, which subsequently affects the accuracy of digitised records. The Digital Projects team maintained a spreadsheet of metadata edits, which can be found in project legacy documentation. In 2020, a crowdsourcing campaign was launched to encourage members of the public to help identify 5,000 images from the collection which had incomplete metadata.

Finding Aids Investigator photograph record sheets were digitised as part of the HES Archives Digital Projects. These record sheets are held on internal storage. Digitised photographs can be cross referenced against these record sheets either by a) external reference field or b) the original filename, where the first component is the record sheet and the second is the frame (e.g. 85_171_0001.tif corresponds to record sheet 85/171 Frame 1).
