Scope and Content The Old Schoolhouse, Currie, Edinburgh The Old Schoolhouse stands to the north-east of Currie Parish Church across what was originally the playground of the parish school. The house was designed by David Bryce in 1830 to replace an earlier thatched building that had fallen into disrepair. A Parish Minute dated 23 March 1831 gives cost of building new house for the School Master as £257-12s-1d. The schoolhouse, surrounded by trees and with its garden enclosed by a low stone wall, has a crowstepped gable facing across the former playground. Crowsteps appear over the semi-dormer windows, and on the porch above the front door. In 1829 the salary of the schoolmaster was £20 per annum, fixed for the next 25 years unless it was altered by an Act of Parliament. He was also allowed an additional 'half chalder of grain'.
