Scope and Content The Stratton tablestone, Liberton Parish Churchyard, Kirkgate, Liberton, Edinburgh The old churchyard of Liberton Parish Church dates from the time of the old parish church which stood on the site until it was demolished in 1814. The churchyard, which surrounds the church on four sides, contains many interesting old headstones. The table-tomb of William Stratton, 'Brewer, Burgess of Edinburgh and Farmer in Braid' who died in 1754, has an effigy of the deceased beneath the tablestone. He holds a skull in his hand, his feet rest on a lamb, and his pillow is a sheaf of corn. The panels of the balusters supporting the tablestone have unusual carvings: a figure in 18th-century costume holding sheaves of corn; the seated figure of a weeping widow; a skeleton holding a skull; and the 'thread of life' with a weight and a dart.
