Scope and Content Sundial, Liberton House, Liberton Drive, Liberton, Edinburgh Liberton House lies at the end of an avenue of elm trees on the south side of Liberton Drive. Built c.1600 for the merchant, William Little, it stands on the site of an earlier building, and incorporates features of the tower-house. This angled sundial, on the south-east corner of the house, is inscribed: 'W L 1683', and bears the motto 'AS.THE.SVNE.RVNS.SO.DEATH.COMES.' (as the sun runs so death comes). Above the dial is a carved scroll bearing the arms of the Little family. William Little, who was Lord Provost of Edinburgh from 1586 to 1591, died in 1601 and was buried in Greyfriars Churchyard. His great-grandson erected an imposing monument over the site of the grave on the south wall of the churchyard in 1683. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
