Scope and Content The Royal Edinburgh Hospital (West House), Tipperlin Road, Morningside, Edinburgh The Royal Edinburgh Hospital, originally known as West House, was designed by William Burn in 1839 to supplement the old East House asylum, which opened in 1809, and to accommodate the 'pauper lunatics' of Edinburgh and Leith. This carved stone head of Philippe Pinel forms the centrepiece of the inner keystone of the pend arch in the former entrance courtyard of West House. Philippe Pinel, a French doctor, pioneered a new approach to those suffering from mental illness. In Paris in 1792 he dramatically undid the chains which bound 53 of his patients, and provided them with warm clothing, good food and comfortable wards. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
