Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating Agnes Dishington, Spott churchyard, East Lothian This gravestone commemorates Agnes Dishington, who died in 1724 aged 34. Filling the pediment is a winged cherub, symbol of the soul's ascent to heaven. Flanked by Doric pilasters, a skull, crossbones and hourglass signify both death and mortality, a sentiment echoed by the 'MEMENTO MORI' (Remember you must die) legend above. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
