Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating Robert Robertson, Stenton churchyard, East Lothian This gravestone commemorates Robert Robertson who died in 1724 aged 9 months. The carvings on the stone suggest that Robert's father was a farmer. Rich in symbolism, this stone depicts a cherub both sowing and harvesting, with a sheaf of corn to his right, emblems especially favoured by farmers. Standing upon a skull, the cherub also represents the triumph of the immortal soul over death. The Sower and Harvester scene is a metaphor drawn from the Biblical quotation 'What man sowing precious seed and going forth doth mourn' as well as being a graphic allusion to the farming life.
