Scope and Content The former South Morningside Church, Braid Road, Morningside, Edinburgh The former South Morningside Church, on the north corner of Braid Road and Cluny Drive, was designed in a mixed Gothic style by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, and opened in 1892. It is now no longer used for worship, and serves as the Cluny Church Centre. The church, built in red sandstone, has a square north-west tower topped with a slim lead spire. The large window in the tower shows a type of Gothic tracery, a decorative pattern of arches that supports the glass in the upper part. The architect, Robert Rowand Anderson (1834-1921), was born and educated in Edinburgh. He trained with John Lessels, and worked with George Gilbert Scott. He had a passion for Gothic styles, and was a pioneer of the 17th-century Scottish revival style. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
