Scope and Content Front face, gravestone of Hugh Meikle, Humbie churchyard, East Lothian This gravestone commemorates Hugh Meikle, who died in 1727 aged 55. Buried here also is Hugh's daughter, Margaret, who died in 1720 aged 5. The crown and hammer indicate Hugh belonged to the Incorporation of Hammermen, craftsmen whose work involved the use of hammers on metal and used a royal crown on their coats of arms. Palm fronds on either side of the crown signify victory over death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
