Description Garvald churchyard. C B, 18th century mural monument. Detail of pediment containing portrait bust of gentleman holding a skull.

Catalogue Number SC 564912

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of EL 6434

Scope and Content Detail of a mural monument, Garvald churchyard, East Lothian The inscription on this fine mural monument is no longer visible, and only the initials C B remain on a finial. A similar portrait-bust appears at Stenton churchyard, obviously the work of the same stonemason. Captured in a thoughtful pose, the portrait-bust fills the monument's pediment. Obviously a man of means, the young gentleman wears an elegant coat with large cuffs and his flowing hair is neatly curled. The skull he holds is a metaphor for death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
