Scope and Content Front face, gravestone possibly commemorating Janet Begbie, East Saltoun churchyard, East Lothian The inscription on this stone is almost indecipherable, but appears to commemorate Janet Begbie who died in 1765 and the initials J A M B are apparent. The figures of the Sower (left) and the Harvester (right), holding a sheaf and stalks of corn, in the upper panel of this stone are a favourite of Lothian farmers. Fruit pours from adjacent bell-flowers, symbolising plenty and the promise of Paradise. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
