Scope and Content West face, gravestone commemorating Jane Seton, Dirleton churchyard, East Lothian This gravestone commemorates Jane Seton, who died in 1749 aged 63. An association with the sea (likely Jane's husband) is implied by the pair of mermaid caryatids flanking the inscription. Within the border of the cartouche above are two Green Men, symbols of renewal. At the top, the Green Man sports a leafy moustache. Sometimes grotesque, cat-like or human, but always sprouting greenery, the Green Man appears in many medieval churches across Britain. Only in post-Reformation Scotland does the Green Man appear as an emblem on gravestones, copied from those in churches. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
