Scope and Content 'Hamlet' gravestone, Stenton churchyard, East Lothian Unfortunately the inscription of this stone has become heavily weathered and is now illegible. This mason's handiwork can also be seen in an almost identical monument at Garvald. Within the pediment is a detailed portrait of a periwigged gentleman, wearing a coat with large and finely detailed cuffs. He regards a skull, a symbol of death. Beneath, various emblems of death border the inscription. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
