Scope and Content East face of a gravestone commemorating Patrick Logan, Stenton churchyard, East Lothian This gravestone commemorates Patrick Logan, a doctor in Garvald, who died in 1742. Winged cherubs symbolise the ascent of the soul to heaven, two appearing on the shoulders of the stone. Bordering the central panel are crossbones and crossed spades, emblems of death, suspended on ribbons. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
