Scope and Content View of main front of Carse House, Argyll and Bute Carse House was built for Captain John Campbell of Druimnamucklach. The first plans were signed by 'J Shepherd, architect', but they were redrawn by a mason, George Johnston, who made some additions. The house was built in 1828 to Johnston's plans. The house is two-storeyed with a basement and has three bays. A portico with round pillars surrounds the central doorway. These pillars are surmounted by Ionic capitals, above which there is a cornice. The house is built of rubble with hewn blocks of masonry, or ashlar, used around the windows and as the quoins at the corners of the building. There is also an ashlar band at the principal floor level and at the eaves-course, below the roof. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
