Scope and Content View of folly on Barbreck estate, Argyll and Bute In 1768, the 4th Duke of Argyll gave most of the estate of Barbreck to General John Campbell, who built the present house which is dated 1790, and was first assessed for window tax in 1793. His descendants lived there until 1930. This Gothic folly consists of a screen-wall which is divided into three bays, each bay containing a large partly-infilled arch-pointed opening. There are the remains of corbelled and crenellated parapets above the slightly projecting end bays. The folly is built from random rubble masonry with quoins of dressed sandstone. It may have been erected to hide a small farmhouse, of which nothing now remains except the foundations. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
