Scope and Content View of south façade of Inveraray Parish Church, Inveraray, Argyll and Bute Archibald, 3rd Duke of Argyll, who inherited the title in 1743, initiated the removal of the town of Inveraray to a new site 0.6km south of the old town. A plan for the new town was drawn up in 1744 by the Duke and Lord Milton (1692-1766). The creation of the new town took over 30 years. The site for Inveraray's parish church was selected as early as 1747, although it was not erected until 1795-1802. Robert Mylne (1733-1814), the architect, designed the double church. The south façade is two-storeyed and three-bayed, flanked at the open corners by single Tuscan columns. The gabled pediment contains a bell dating to 1724. The windows are round-headed in the upper storey and there are blind recesses on the lower storey. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
