Scope and Content Detail of south-west entrance to Stonefield Castle Hotel, Argyll and Bute Stonefield Castle, a mansion in Scots Baronial style, is sited on the west shore of Loch Fyne. It was designed by William Henry Playfair (1790-1857) and built 1836-40 for John Campbell of Stonefield. The house is now in use as an hotel. This main entrance has a double roll-moulded doorway with a strapwork decorated keystone. Above this is a strapwork pediment which bears the monogram of Campbell, and a square panel dated 1837 bearing a galley and the Campbell crest of a boar's head. The door is flanked by conical-roofed corbelled turrets which bear panels containing biblical verses. A balustraded stair leads to the door. Much of the south-west exterior of the building is decorated with Scots Renaissance- and Baronial-style details. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
