Scope and Content Detail of armorial panel on the south-east façade of Stonefield Castle Hotel, Argyll and Bute Stonefield Castle, a mansion in Scots Baronial style, is sited on the west shore of Loch Fyne. It was designed by William Henry Playfair (1790-1857) and built 1836-40 for John Campbell of Stonefield. The house is now in use as an hotel. This armorial panel on the first floor of the central bay of the south-east façade, is decorated with the mottoes 'NE OBLIVISCARIS' (Do not forget) and 'MEDIOCRIA FIRMA' (Strengthen the faint-hearted). The crest of the Campbells is a boar's head. William Henry Playfair adopted the Scots Baronial style in order to gain work in the lucrative country house market. His friend, Lord Cockburn, considered Stonefield House to be 'worthy of its author' but, at a cost of £30,000, too expensive. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
