Scope and Content View of ground-floor hall at Stonefield Castle Hotel, Argyll and Bute Stonefield Castle, a mansion in Scots Baronial style, is sited on the west shore of Loch Fyne. It was designed by William Henry Playfair (1790-1857) and built 1836-40 for John Campbell of Stonefield. The house is now in use as an hotel. All the main apartments are located on the ground floor. The drawing room, library and dining room are all entered from the hall or ante-room. The ante-room has a timber chimneypiece to the right and a strapwork plaster ceiling. Playfair was influenced by William Burn (1789-1870) when he planned the layout of country houses. Burn felt comfort and privacy to be important and rarely exceeded two storeys and an attic in height, and the family and servant wings were kept separate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
