Scope and Content Detail of a window on the south-east façade of Stonefield Castle Hotel, Argyll and Bute Stonefield Castle, a mansion in Scots Baronial style, is sited on the west shore of Loch Fyne. It was designed by William Henry Playfair (1790-1857) and built 1836-40 for John Campbell of Stonefield. The house is now in use as an hotel. This window on the south-east façade of the house is roll-moulded and is surmounted by a strapwork panel. There are a lot of Scots Renaissance and Baronial details with roll-moulded windows, strapwork, corbelled turrets and crowstepped gables. William Henry Playfair adopted the Scots Baronial style in order to gain work in the lucrative country house market. The market was dominated by William Burn (1789-1870) who completed four such houses annually. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
