Scope and Content Detail of dormer gablet on south-east façade of Stonefield Castle Hotel, Argyll and Bute Stonefield Castle, a mansion in Scots Baronial style, is sited on the west shore of Loch Fyne. It was designed by William Henry Playfair (1790-1857) and built 1836-40 for John Campbell of Stonefield. The house is now in use as an hotel. This dormer gablet, above a roll-moulded window surround, is decorated with a strapwork panel and a thistle-shaped finial. There are many Scots Renaissance and Baronial details on the house exterior, including strapwork and roll-moulded windows. William Henry Playfair adopted the Scots Baronial style in order to gain work in the lucrative country house market. His friend, Lord Cockburn, considered Stonefield House to be 'worthy of its author' but, at a cost of £30,000, too expensive. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
