Scope and Content View of principal entrance from the east, Poltalloch House, Argyll and Bute This Jacobean-style mansion, now a roofless shell, was built for Neill Malcolm between 1849 and 1853 to designs produced in the London office of William Burn (1789-1870). Burn himself staked out the proposed outline of the building in 1845. The principal entrance façade has a projecting entrance tower, surmounted by a parapet carrying a semicircular panel, decorated with the Malcolm coat of arms. The round-arched doorway is set between Tuscan columns below a canted bay window. William Burn (1789-1870) initiated the Scottish Baronial style for Scottish country houses. His earliest commissions were Grecian-style public buildings, but by 1818 he was designing four country houses per year. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
