Scope and Content Lighthouse, Charlestown Harbour, Fife This harbour was enlarged in the late 19th century to ship coal and lime in steamships which would have been unable to use the 18th and early 19th century facilities. This light was built on the west quay of c1840, to mark the entrance. This view shows the lighthouse from the north. It was unusual in being of wooden construction, apart from the metal container at the rear, which housed an acetylene generator to provide gas for the lamp. Charlestown harbour was originally built to serve the adjacent limekilns, which were on an unprecedented scale, It also shipped coal from pits in the Dunfermline area. From the 1920s to the 1950s it was used for shipbreaking. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
